Roths WIne Bar History

Licensed as a wine bar since January 1923, Roth's Wine Bar represents a slice of Mudgee's history. The bar began when Robert Roth left Craigmoor (now Robert Oatley Vineyards) at 22 years of age to do his own thing. He purchased the historic terrace that houses the wine bar and originally set it up as a general store.

The story goes that prior to becoming licensed in 1923 there were several 'under the counter' beverages available to thirsty farmers who had travelled a long way to the store for their monthly supplies. The local constabulary were naturally not comfortable with this so they encouraged Roth's to become licensed.

Roth's drinks were know as 1080 (pronounced ten-eighty and the name of a feral animal poison), Lucijet (a sheep drench) and Diesel. To this day the licence remains one of NSW oldest wine bar licenses of its type.

Roth's Wine Bar was well known as the base for the Home Rule Band who performed at the bar one night a month for 20 years. They were often joined by local poets and impromptu performers. To this day music still represents a big part of Roth's with live music every Friday and Saturday night.
